15 Min. Musical update, and gratuitous plugs

Monday, May 1st, 2006

Hi everybody,

I hope you are all enjoying the start of summer, if you’re running a university-type schedule, or the start of May otherwise.

Some of you are probably expecting a mass email about 15 Minute Musicals, and wondering where they are. Others of you are probably wondering at this point what a 15 Minute Musical is. To answer both questions – this past year my friend Steve Heisler and I did several 15 Minute Musicals at Coffee Hauses run by the Acadia Student Union (open mic style things), wherein we took classic musicals (all Disney as it turned out) and just did the musical numbers (shortens them a lot, and kinda changes the plot at times). Being the archivist type I am, I videoed them all and will be putting them online.

My digitization plans have gotten delayed, however, with a couple other gigs which I figure I might as well plug in case you are in the area, or are just curious about what I’m up to this summer.

First up is the local Annapolis Valley Music Festival, where I’m playing in several organ classes (I’ve been taking formal organ lessons at Acadia this year). The classes are at the frightfully early time of 9am this Tuesday morning, at the Acadia Chapel. The Chapel organ is freakin’ awesome, though (Casavant!), so if you’re still around the WV, you might want to check it out.

Next, the gig that has really delayed video posting is the musical I’m playing piano for at Hants East Rural High, “Fame: The Musical” (the broadway show, not to be confused with the tv show, or the movie which is actually referenced during the musical). It’s a bit of a commute (~1.5 hours each way, either from Lunenburg or Wolfville), but it’s a fun gig. If you really want to go on a road trip, it’s about 60 km from Halifax, on the 102, Exit 9 (I can send more precise directions if desired) and runs this Thurs to Sat at 7pm.

Finally, my biggest musical gig this summer is at the Chester Playhouse, where I played “The Fantasticks” last year. This year I’m playing piano (and rehearsal accompanying, and band leading if there’s more than just piano) for the show “Kurt Weill: From Berlin to Broadway”, which is a revue of his songs from a pile of his different shows. Or so the Germans would have us believe…

“Weill” runs from July 7th thru July 21st. There’s a couple matinees in there, and a pile of evening shows. Mary Lou Martin is directing again (she directed “Fantasticks” as well). I’m going to suggest we change the name of the show to “The Fantasticks, Part Zwei” (that is to say, Part Deux), but I don’t think it’ll fly. Of course, it’s a long long Weill from May to December…

Pun aside… Beyond my musical gigs, I expect I’ll be doing a fair bit of tech support around Lunenburg this summer, some web work for the business my friends Mike, Ryan and I are starting – ForceNet ( http://www.forcenet.ca/ ), and probably all sorts of other odds and ends (hopefully including some ‘chillin’, as the kids say). As for the 15 Minute Musicals, I hope to get them up (and some personal website revamping done) by the end of May/early June, so keep your eyes on the prize… er.. your inbox.

Party on, everybody. Have an awesome summer, and feel free to drop me a line about what you’re up to.

Yours,
G

PS Possibly by the time I send the email announcing the Musicals
actually being online I’ll have made a proper mailing list, with
automatic functions and whatnot. In the meantime, if you want another
email addy used, want off the list, have a friend who wants on the
list, etc, just drop me a line.
